How did the westward pioneers ever make it from St Louis to Arizona in wagons with wood wheels, no asphalt and no air-conditioning?

It's amazing what the pioneers accomplished. We don't give them enough credit, thinking of the simplistic life they lived, yet it took great imagination, planning and skill to do things we take for granted. A very inspiring shadow shot.
